The cold weather is in full effect, serving as a harsh reminder to keep hair hydrated during the dry months. Ouidad, top stylist, curly hair authority, and author of Curl Talk, shares a hair-full of conditioning basics to keep strands healthy this winter and all year long.
Daily Conditioning Dose: After shampooing, the hair cuticle is parched so following with a daily or deep conditioner is a must. Basic conditioners detangle strands without causing stress to the hair, but they should also be adding back moisture to the hair. Proper application is the key to beautifully, hydrated strands so follow these simple steps to ensure your treat your hair right!
1) Thoroughly rinse shampoo out of your hair with warm water.
2) Pour a small amount of conditioner onto the fingers of one hand. Then rub both sets of fingertips together to evenly distribute conditioner.
3) Begin by applying conditioner two inches from the scalp. This can easily be done by gathering hair into a mock ponytail and sliding fingertips down to the ends. Conditioning is most important for the ends. Remember, never rub conditioner into your scalp!
4) Run your fingers, or use a specially made wide-tooth comb, through your hair to detangle and condition the hair shaft.
5) Allow conditioner to remain for 3 minutes to plump hair with moisture and proteins.
6) Rinse hair by letting cool water run through it, rubbing only the scalp with your fingertips to remove any remaining conditioner.
