Should You Wear Pantyhose? When? Where?

Do you love the Editors Debate but often find yourself wondering “Jennifer, what kind of underwear do you have on right now?” If you do, I have something I think you might be interested in!

Our new sister site for women in the workplace, Grindstone, is doing a fun feature called “she said/she said” in which women debate important social topics, and I debate whether or not you should wear pantyhose to the office. That’s an important topic, too. I don’t want to spoil anything for you, but the answer is “maybe.”

Check out the entire debate here!

I use to work in an Office where “Professional Dess” was required as we constantly had clients coming and going and the Brass wanted us to alway’s look the best we possibly could and the subject of Women wearing Pantyhose was a constant topic among everyone.. Guys and Gals. Let me explain…
Guys were required to wear Dress Pants, Dress Shoes, Dress Shirts, Ties and even preferrably, a Sport Jacket.. basically, a suit. On the days that clients were not coming into the office, Guys were required to wear Dress Pants or at the very least dockers, Dress Shoes, Dress Shirt, Sweater or Polo type shirt. On casual Fridays if there were no clients, Guys were allowed to wear Jeans, Dress or Tennis Shoes, Any Shirt as long as there was no printed T-Shirts because lets face it.. You never who will get offended these days and on super hot days with no clients on casual Fridays ONLY, Guys could wear classy or dressy looking shorts as long as they still had on socks and Dress or tennis shoes. Now… The Women..
Women were required to wear Dresses or long skirts, dress shoes (High Heel or flats did not matter), Nylons (Pantyhose or Stockings didn’t matter as long as the skirt or dress covered up the stocking tops if that was preferred), blouse, Dress Shirt. On Days where there were no clients, Women were to wear Dresses, Skirts, Those Skorts (Shorts that were skirts), dress pants, Dress Shoes, Pantyhose or tights. On casual Fridays, Women could wear Jeans, Pants, Shirts with no prints, Dress Shoes or Tennis Shoes and Dressy shorts on really hot days with no clients.
Now the reality.. Guys who did not wear what the dress code demanded were sent home to change or just given the day off completely with out pay and possibly written up for policy violation. Lets face it, everyone was totally aware of this Dress code when they got hired, You had a choice of whether or not you wanted to take the job there if you didn’t agree with the company politics.
Women would show up bare legged, skirts, Short Skirts, flip flop sandals. not all of them mind you, just the rebels. The rebel women would complain about how hot they are, “If we have to wear them, so should the guys”, trust me.. we heard every excuse. Yet, the guys wear always in Dress pants, Dress Socks, Dress shoes and Ladies walking around damn near nude, I think they would’ve been nude if they could. They looked totally trampy. Guys would get upset because we were hot with what we had to wear but we did it because it was required of us yet those few women showing up like they were fresh from their street corner. Personally, I think a woman looks sexier, classier, more eligant than those that don’t.
