Anna Wintour on 60 Minutes recap

Just in case you missed Anna Wintour on 60 Minutes this Sunday, here’s a quick recap of how the interview went. Wintour smiled several times throughout the interview and made light of things like being the inspiration for the book and film, The Devil Wears Prada. While I respect 60 Minutes as much as the next gal, I have to say the interview was ill-conceived and bringing up some things (how “cold” Anna is, and how much she resembles Miranda Priestly irl) were old news.

On Vogue’s immediate future – Things will remain glam, but September’s issue will have to be “grounded” i.e. there has to be merchandise pushed that the reader can conceivably afford. In this economy, shopping at J.Crew represents “the dream,” so hopefully Vogue editors see eye to eye with Wintour on the topic.

On her “cold” persona – “We’re here to work.” Enough said. Anna says that there’s a time for work and a time for play, and often folks forget where the line is drawn when it comes to creative fields. As she mentioned, she has colleagues who have worked with her for 15-20 years, so she can’t be that bad.

On her eventual departure from the magazine – She will go quietly. I can’t imagine when this will be as she’s alive and kickin’ and if she’s there for more than 10 years, I won’t be surprised.

There were also appearances from John Galliano of Dior, Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel and Nicolas Ghesquiere of Balenciaga. Galliano was recommended to Bernard Arnault (CEO of LVMH) by Wintour when he needed someone to head up the house of Dior. When pressed about how her opinion counts more than most, Wintour simply says that yes, people take her opinion into consideration. Considering how she jousts them from the magazine, I can bet that people are doing more than that when designing a collection. Ghesquiere says that there’s a point when he’s designing each collection when the thought does cross his mind – will Anna like this? We also saw Wintour pay a visit to the showroom of fashion darling Alexander Wang and say that a long sleeved mini dress retailing for $1200 was “reasonable.” Let’s just hope that September issue stays “grounded.”

What did you think of Anna Wintour’s interview on 60 Minutes?
