Best Accessories for Summer

Just like switching out sweaters and boots for tanks and sandals, I also like to switch out my accessories to those that have a fresh and light feel for summer.  You definitely don’t want to be mixing heavy accessories with summer fashions.  Here are my favorite accessories for this summer:

  • floral hair accessories – There are so many beautiful clips and headbands with fabric or synthetic floral elements this summer.  I love how they add a romantic feeling to any outfit.  There is a diversity of options from the tiniest subtle flower on the tip of a bobby pin to the oversized fabric flower headpiece.

  • floppy sun hats – I have posted a lot this season about the functional and stylish floppy sun hat.  These not only protect your face from sun damage, but are completely glamorous and make you feel like a movie star.  I like the straw and other natural materials that are soft and fall naturally.  Make sure to pick one up on your way to the beach!

  • cross-body bags – I enjoy the versatility of the cross-body bag that can be found everywhere this summer in different sizes and materials.  The long strap can be worn across the body or hanging down on one side.  Keep in mind that the bag doesn’t need to be a messenger style to be worn in the cross-body fashion.  Most have a detachable long strap, so you can switch to a shorter handle style when you want to dress up the look.  My favorites are the smaller colorful leather styles.

  • colorful plastic frame sunglasses – Retro plastic frames are making a huge comeback!  My favorite sunglasses styles this season are in bold colored plastic, with aviator or Ray-Ban Wayfarer-inspired lens shapes.  The lenses are slightly oversized, but have a thicker rim and more sporty feel than the glamorous Audrey Hepburn-inspired styles that were popular for the last few years.  There are lots of affordable options in fun “shades”!

  • statement necklaces – The statement necklace has been in fashion for the last few seasons, but for summer make sure to find something that is light and would pair well with tanks and deep V-necks.  I like the necklaces with layers of brightly colored cloth and beads and stay away from metals and heavy pendants.  There are lots of styles with a romantic handmade quality that are great for summer.

  • embellished flat sandals – Rather than the minimalistic style that was popular last year, this summer flats have bold and flashy details.  I like the large turquoise rocks, complicated metal straps, suede fringe, rocker-inspired metal studs, and colored jewels that I have been seeing.  If the rocker style doesn’t really suit you, there are lots of options besides the gladiator sandal.  There are beautiful embellished flat sandals that are still feminine and can be paired with summery florals.
