HBO documentary on NYC Garment District

Leave it to my father to give me the scoop on an amazing documentary recently featured on HBO. Schmatta: From Rags to Riches to Rags tells us the story of New York City’s Garment District and the pivotal role it played once upon a time.

An interesting (though not surprising) fact featured says in 1965, 95% of the clothing for sale in America was produced in the country. In 2009, a mere 5% of apparel on the market is made in the U.S. The documentary will play OnDemand after this week, so if you have HBO, give it a go and see how amazing the Garment District once was. It’s definitely a dying industry with so many jobs being outsourced in vast numbers. It really makes you ponder how “cheap” that import T-shirt truly is.
