What’s more offensive than manufacturing a bunch of spandex-blend panties with a vaguely “South Western”-looking print, tacking the word Navajo on them and selling them to alt-tweens everywhere on the cheap? Without, of course, any regard for or involvement from the Navajo people?
…How about doing effectively the same thing, only this time the item in question is a $560 skirt?
Cool girl label Isabel Marant–beloved by style stars like Alexa Chung and Kate Bosworth–didn’t learn from the twin Urban Outfitters / Forever21 ’Navajo’ fiascos. In response to outcry from the Navajo Nation and fashion bloggers alike, both companies have subsequently changed the names of the offending products. We seriously doubt Marant’s item will be altered, though, because 1) the label’s a lot lower profile and 2) many of those fashion bloggers who were outraged last time around are… big fans of Marant.
One last thing: as Styleite noted this morning, Daily Candy–in a stupendous lack of irony–actually put the skirt in a round-up of clothes perfect for Thanksgiving, saying, “Festive and flirty, Isabel Marant’s Navajo skirt is perfect for the occasion in every way (especially with a gathered elastic waist).” Perfect and totally not insensitive!
The skirt is available, name and all, over at Barneys.

It’d be nice if the same (justified) displeasure was also directed at any and all ridiculous fashion items labeled as “Gypsy”.
