Miss America: Countdown to the Crown recap episode 3

Miss America: Countdown to the Crown recap episode 3

Original Air Date: 01/15/2009

Last week, I wasn’t impressed with Miss America: Countdown to the Crown. I’m hoping this weeks recap of the TLC show will be a little more fun to watch. The host is incredibly unappealing, and it’s hard to get to know so many girls in such a short amount of time. That said, I don’t have a huge favorite or anyone I remember from last week, so we’ll see who wows us this time around.

The show kicks off with the girls at a mall, where they’re given 90 minutes to find an outfit for the interview segment of the competition. Each team is given a budget of $800 for the entire team, and each member must be outfited with this money. The two teams that have the best overall look will make it to the individual challenge. One of the green members is determined to win, but we’ll see who takes the third gold sash at the end of this week’s episode.

The girls scramble for outfits. The grey team is looking for an all-black theme at first, but they’re running into issues with finding Miss North Dakota’s outfit. She needs a lot of help for some reason, and I guess she’s never been shopping by herself. Miss Maine had trouble finding sizes and colors, and the Pink team is getting sick of dealing with her.

The Blue team’s Miss Kansas says their team just went for what looked best on her regardless of the theme. Miss Florida’s team, which is the Green team, is having issues as well. You know how it is when you need an outfit for something and you can’t find anything! We’ve all be there! Some of these outfits seem a little too sexy for the interview segment of the pageant, but I guess these girls know what’s acceptable and what’s not. Miss Dakota is still doubting herself, which is boring to watch and difficult for her team to deal with under such a time crunch.

The Grey team is running out of time, and remember, the girls have to show up to the judges dressed and ready to go. All of the teams make it back in time, and two teams will be selected as winners. Their looks are critiqued and no one is a fan of the animal prints on top and poor Miss Dakota’s dress isn’t loved by anyone. More of the outfits are unattractive, and some of the girls look ridiculous. Clinton Kelly will show up later in this episode, so the girls aren’t really ready.

By the way, during this entire thing they keep showing previews for Toddlers and Tiaras…I can’t WAIT for this show!

Clinton Kelly shows up and Miss Rhode Island says she wishes she could call her mom because they’re such What Not to Wear fans. Clinton is there to tell them how to look sexy and sophisticated. There’s importance to look classic, but still modern. Any sparkle or detail should draw attention to the contestant’s face, and always elongate your silhouette. Clinton asks the girls to walk in their gowns so he can get a look at the dresses in action. Some of the dresses are a little too pageant-y, and some are quite fashion forward. Miss Maine’s dress is a total miss for me, and I’m loving Miss New Hampshire’s gown.

The three wild card picks for this challenge are Miss Oklahoma, Miss Michigan, and Miss Maine! Who would have thought?! I guess I wouldn’t make a good judge for this show!

Miss Maine proceeds to give us a motivational speech about going for our goals. She looks sort of…mature to be in the pageant, doesn’t she?

The next challenge? A black dress will be given as a blank canvas and the girls will have to take a knife to it to create a frock that best reflects them.

Miss Oklahoma’s mother was diagnosed with MS the day she left for the competition, so her phone call back home is heartfelt and sweet.

Clinton comes back the day the girls are going to rework their dresses. Miss Michigan thinks she has a leg up becuase her mother is the “Rhinestone Queen.” Clinton doesn’t have much faith in their skills and I don’t blame him. Equipped with feathers, rhinestones and tons of other junk, the ladies rip the dresses, and reconstruct them, which isn’t pretty at all.

Now the girls have to work it on the runway. Miss Indiana’s is a little nutty, and Miss Maine’s walk is horrible. You think the girls would have remembered a thing or two from last week’s runway walk lesson. The girls had fun, but the judges aren’t so excited about the dresses they saw on the catwalk. Judging this competition must be one of the most boring and excruciating things ever.

Miss South Dakota, Miss Hawaii, and Miss Rhode Island, whose dress was hideous. I don’t know what the judges are thinking giving kudos to her Holly Hobbie pink buttons all over her black dress, but apparently they’re fans. I really liked the girl with the peacock feathers (Miss Oklahoma, I think!)! That looked like a dress you’d see in a store.

Miss South Dakota takes the gold sash this week, and she’s thrilled. She knows it brings her one step closer to the Top 15.

Next week a former Miss America drops by, and the girls have thier last chance at the shot for the gold sash and viewers will get to vote for four of the Top 15. Can’t wait…or maybe I can.
