Project Runway Canada episode 10 recap
Original Air Date: 03/31/2009
We’re down to the wire on season 2 of Project Runway Canada. The show hasn’t had the best talent, but there are a couple of decent designers – namely Jessica and Sunny. Both have great craftsmanship and can adapt to various styles. In the final four are those two, plus Genvieve and Jason who were able to come back to the competition after making a surprise appearance on last week’s episode. Adejoke and Kim were sent packing and Genvieve and Jason have a second chance to make it to the final three and show at Toronto fashion week.

The Challenge
This week’s challenge scares everyone, at least a little bit. The designers meet with Iman on the runway and are told that this week they’ll have to design a tailored business suit for the modern working woman. Some of the designers aren’t comfortable creating tailored pieces, so its going to be a challenge to improve their craftsmanship in such a small amount of time. They hit the fabric store with $225 and 30 minutes to shop.
Genvieve knows what she’s looking for right away and has decided on a Deco-inspired suit jacket that will be structured. I know we know Genvieve by now and her outfits are hardly structured. I’m wondering if she can pull this off, given we’ve seen the same silhouette from her time and time again. Sunny has never made a suit, and is buying fabric with no real end plan in mind. Jason chooses a bright pink fabric with teeny white polka dots. What is he going to do with this? I’m afraid to find out.
In the Workroom
Jessica tells us she’s going with a suit that is both sexy and feminine. Genvieve feels out of her element, and Jason says he knows Sunny is the favorite. He remarks that he rather be the underdog and churn out great work that is a surprise versus being the favorite and failing to deliver. Jealous, much? Jason works quickly now that Kim is out of the way, and he’s practically done with his “suit.” The suit has no sleeves, but Jason doesn’t seem too concerned.
Brian stops by and takes a look at each designer’s work in progress. Genvieve’s design needs to come down a notch and become more accessible. Brian tells Sunny that he needs to “go there” with his suit, and not fear the challenge. Because this is Sunny’s first time making a suit, I guess he’s being a little apprehensive with the design. Jason’s outfit is looking horrible and Brian lets him know. There’s no sleeves and there’s a huge bow around the collar, which looks trashy. And let’s not even touch on the fact that it’s pink and white polka dots! He decides that Brian is right and he should come up with an actual jacket for the outfit. Sunny jokes that he wishes Jason would have left the garment as is, so at least then they would have known who would be in the final three.
Brian stops in once again and has a surprise for the designers – they’re to design one more garment…lingerie! Another twist? Their models will be purchasing the fabric for them! The designers give their models a quick rundown of what they need and with $75 and 30 minutes to shop, the models pick material and hope it’s what the designers are needing.
Jason thinks he has an advantage in the lingerie challenge because he’s a straight man, and Genvieve seems terrified of this since she’s never created any lingerie. Sunny cuts the bra for his model to her chest and it comes out amazing! The fit is stellar, and Jessica is also doing a decent job, creating a little cami and boyshorts ensemble.
Genvieve is having issues with her suit, as the back of the suit jacket is crooked and crazily apparent thanks to the black piping she’s applied.
On the Runway
Sunny – The fit of the suit is great, the lingerie is even better. I don’t care of the suit in terms of designer, but the craftsmanship is there.
Genvieve – The suit has a horrible fit, but the slip she’s created is quite pretty.
Jessica – The suit is sort of bad, but the lingerie is cute. This outfit doesn’t blow me away like I’d hoped it would.
Jason – The suit is hideous in terms of design, but his jacket did come out great. The lingerie is also nice.
Sunny explains that he wanted a strong suit with simple details. The judges love his suit, and also adore his bra and panty set. They’re impressed when he says he cut the bra to the model’s body to get such a perfect fit. Genvieve’s critique isn’t quite as kind, and the judges tell her the look is overboard. Less would have been more, but they are a fan of the slip. Iman likes the juxtaposition used by Jason in his suit (she says juxtaposition, I say mess!) and Jessica’s outfit is deemed overall just OK.
In Deliberation
Iman brings up one of the best points – if Genvieve shows at fashion week, will she send nothing but draping down the runway? I think the clear answer is yes, as a brief montage of Genvieve’s pieces flash before us and we see everything she’s created have been the exact same silhouette! Sunny is the strongest contender and he’s definitely the one to beat as far as the judges are concered. They say Jessica also had too many details on this particular suit, but throughout the competition she has created great pieces and shown a wide range. The designers are brought back out on the runway to hear who will be creating an entire collection and showing at Toronto fashion week.
Sunny is the winner of this challenge, giving him four or five wins under his belt! Yay! Jessica and Jason are both safe, so they’ll head to fashion week, while Genvieve is sent home. She doesn’t measure up.
Next week – We see the designers create their collections and they learn that an additional piece must be designed for the big show in Toronto.
