Jackie Alvo, the designer behind up-and-coming Brooklyn label J-Alvo, says that her design aesthetic is inspired by everything she sees, hears, and reads. And you can definitely feel the multiple layers of reference when looking at her work. Which is not to say that it is overworked, au contraire, everything looks impeccably minimal. But there is something about her retro-modern, neo-minimalist, totally handmade take on clothing that makes you aware of how much is going on in this designer’s head.
When I look at this fab 60’s A-line shift dress, for example, I see mod, I see Mondrian, and I see Williamsburg by way of art school, but somehow it all comes together in a beautifully simple dress that will look good on a lot of people. There’s plenty more where this dress came from in the form of hyper intellectual cardigans, jaunty tanks, and more great dresses, so do yourself a favor and get acquainted with J-Alvo.
