It was a glittering affair when Denmark’s royal family welcomed the new year at a gala court banquet at Amalienborg Palace.

The traditional celebration was attended by Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary, and Prince Joachim and Princess Marie. Joining them were guests who included Denmark’s Parliament Speaker Thor Pedersen, the Chief Mayor of Copenhagen Ritt Bjerregaard, the Royal Confessor and Bishop of Copenhagen Erik Norman Svendsen, and various other dignitaries. This was Princess Marie’s first appearance at the New Year gala.

The royal ladies were elegant in their evening gowns and fur pieces. Queen Margrethe wore a gold gown, accented with a maroon evening gown and a gray stole. Princess Mary was dazzling in white, with a short cape setting off rubies that were once owned by Prince Frederik’s grandmother, Queen Ingrid. Princess Marie was in a navy blue gown and a beige stole.
The evening’s menu included cream of fish soup, venison with potatoes, Napoleon cake, and a 400-year-old wine.
