Do You Remember: Cupcake Dolls

The office was just having a discussion about random toy nostalgia, and Lilit brought up Cupcake Dolls–otherwise known as the Poor Man’s Strawberry Shortcake.

What looked like a cupcake flipped out into a doll, with the cupcake “wrapper” becoming the skirt of her dress and the cupcake top becoming a weird plastic “frosting bonnet.”

Maybe the Poor Stoner’s Strawberry Shortcake? This commercial for offshoot “Tropical Treats” line makes us think so…

Omg, I totally remember these, in fact I think they’re part of the reason I had an eating disorder.

OMG the first thing I ever bought with my allowance when I was 6 was one of these dolls. Pink one with the glitter dress on the far left. Thank you, you have made my Sunday :)

Not only do I remember them, but I had every single one pictured in the first photo.

I had so many of those stupid things…

I totally had one of these! But do you know what was even better? Lady Lovely Locks. I’m pretty sure those little animal barrette with funky tail hair were the genesis of our generation’s obsession with extensions.

      yes they were!

Yep, and you could hold the cupcake skirt up to your face and inhale the plastic sweetness, then take it away and rasp “Baby wants to fuck” a la Blue Velvet.

Being 8 was fun. Being 8 with parents who didn’t care about movie ratings was more fun.
