Should You Get Brazilian Keratin Or Japanese Straightening?

Oh, you say you have naturally beautiful hair? You don’t need either treatment? You are a loser.

Since my natural hair looks like Hermione Granger’s (you can tell by the Harry Potter reference that there are no losers here) I’ve been doing Japanese Straightening for years. The people at Hayato NYC are fantastic, and, contrary to many reports about Japanese Straightening, it has not caused me to go bald. However, after trying the fantastic Brazilian Keratin Tropic Treatment at Lasio,  I might be converting! Here’s a brief, somewhat subjective guide to each treatment.

How Long Do The Treatments Last?

JS: 6 months

BK: 2-3 months

How Much Do They Cost? On Average. How Much Do Yours Cost?

JS: $400

BK: $250

How Straight Will It Make Your Hair?

JS: Straight. Mine is still able to hold curl if I use a curling iron, unless it’s a rainy day, at which point it will fall completely straight when I go out. Which I like, but then, I didn’t have super attractive curls to begin with.

BK: It’s more about eliminating frizz than eliminating curl (though it will relax your curls). However, you’ll retain more volume, and have more freedom to style your hair.

Will It Make My Hair Look Damaged?

JS: Yeah, if you don’t take care of your hair Japanese Straightening will make it look dried out. They’ll give you some conditioning products, and I deep condition mine every other week. That basically just entails towel drying my shampooed hair hair, combing in tons of conditioner and hanging out with  shower cap on my hair for 20 minutes. It’s not a huge inconvenience, but it is something to consider.

BK: It will actually make your hair look better. And shinier! In some bizarre twist, the more you heat treat it, the better your hair will look. And it will repair a lot of the damage done to your hair from other treatments.

How Long Do The Treatments Take To Do?

JS: 3-4 hours, which feels like approximately 700 years.

BK: 1 and a half hour, which does not feel like 700 years.

Do You Have To Take Special Precautions After The Treatment?

JS: Good Lord, don’t let it get wet. Carry an umbrella everywhere. If it does get wet, blow dry it as soon as possible. Don’t tuck it behind your ears or put it in a ponytail or it will get a kink in it.

BK: Ditto.

How Long Before You Can Wash Your Hair?

JS: 48 Hours

BK: Immediately! Sooner is actually better since washing the hair will set the treatment, after which you can tuck it behind your ears and not worry about it.

I was thinking about doing the japanese straightening but everyone advised me not too as it will become extremly dry and not so managable then they advised the brazilian straighting i have long curly fizzy hair… What should i do??

Since I got the japanese straightening, my hair has been straight and shiny but I noticed that has been falling a lot. I has been 5 weeks since I got it. Do you think it can get worse and I can get bald or it could have been just an episode?

    Thank you so much,
    Patricia.

my hair is damaged, i dye it and have split ends, i got a perm years ago and as a result my hair has ugly frizzy curls but grows straight. is the brazilian keratin for me? or the japanese straightening?

Does chlorine (as in pool water) or ocean water affect the Brazilian Keratin treatment?

The Brazilian hair treatment in America doesn’t have much formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is what makes the treatment last and stay in the hair. The US limits how much can be used I think so it only lasts for a few months. However, I got mine done in South America where the guy did use a lot of it and my keratin treatment is going to last for about 9 months. While I was receiving the treatment, I had to wear a gas mask to protect myself from the formaldehyde.

I’m going to be sad when it wears off and I have to pay double to get a treatment that will only last 1/3 of the time.

Jennifer, how does your hair react to humidity with the Japanese Straightening? Are you allowed to highlight/color your hair with both of the treatments?

    • By Jennifer Wright

You can color your hair as long as you’re going darker, but not lighter. And for me, the biggest benefit is that it still stays straight in massive humidity, whereas normally mine would be a giant frizzball. It does mean it just goes perfectly straight though – in bad weather I’ve just found I can’t style it, but that doesn’t bother me that much.

      Thanks Jennifer!

Be careful, ya’ll. Keratin has the carcinogen formaldehyde in it. I’d stick with old-school methods and skip this.

How does a person go about getting the Brazilian Keratin Tropic Treatment? What salons or locations offer it?

    • By Jennifer Wright

Lasio is great in New York, if you’re elsewhere I’d just google it or check with salons in your area.

You can call Lasio for a list of salons in your city. Think the number is still 212.477.2099.
