Skinny Models Are Out, Curves Are In!

Naeem Khan Spring 09 fashion

According to this article, skinny models are a turn off. A new study has found that trying to sell anything on TV and other advertising by using skinny models, doesn’t work. The ads that show skinny models actually discouraged women from buying the product they were trying to sell.

Psychologist Phillippa Diedrichs said, "For anything to change, research has to be convincing, not just to government and health researchers, but also to people in advertising who actually make the decisions.Often people make the argument that thinness sells, and that’s why they use slim models. But we can change the images we see and still sell products but also make people feel better about themselves."

I have known this fact for ever. It wouldn’t have taken a research study to tell me that a women with curves sells a bottle of perfume better than a woman with her bones protruding. Take the Dove campaign for example. It has been incredibly successful!

Also, you didn’t see any pole thin models at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show the other day did you? They get it. They know that curves, and lots of them, are going to sell their product better. Who wants to see an empty bra walking down the runway, right?

So, all you advertisers, take a hint….put real women in your ads and you sales just might go up!
