People come from far and wide to eat at the original location of the Shake Shack, Danny Meyer‘s cultishly loved burger joint in Manhattan’s Madison Square Park. The only problem is the legendary queue: a ridiculously delicious Shack Burger will cost you a ridiculously long time on line. On a sunny Saturday, for example, waits can easily top two hours. This makes for some pretty impatient customers.
With Gloss headquarters directly across the street from the original Shake Shack, editors Jennifer Wright and Ashley Cardiff have spent a lot of time contemplating that line. Last week, they decided to use their ruthless capitalist instinct (and some free labor) to ruthlessly exploit the Shake Shack line. And so they sent video intern Paige Polesnak to Madison Square Park to find out how much linegoers would pay to get to the front of the Shake Shack line. After each person named his or her price, Paige revealed that EIC Jennifer Wright was only moments away from ordering.
We originally went into this exercise as a social experiment (what are people willing to pay on top of a Shack Burger to jump the line and do they have any moral misgivings about cheating?). We came out of this exercise with delicious burgers and shakes. And enough spare cash to feed a small group of friends. Check it out.
And a huge thanks to Paige Polesnak for making this possible.
