Career: Before his marriage to then Princess Elizabeth, Prince Philip trained and served in the Royal Navy. He attained the rank of Commander in 1952. He withdrew from his naval career upon Queen Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne. Though he has no official role as the Queen’s Consort, he has supported the Queen in her royal duties, and fulfills numerous royal engagements on his own. He established The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in 1956 as a program for the personal development of young people.

Other Notes: Prince Philip is a great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria. He was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, but renounced his title when he acquired British citizenship in 1947. He then adopted his family’s name of Mountbatten.
