Poll: Would You Keep Jewelry Given to You By Your Ex?

This week, Anne Hathway reportedly declined to claim jewelry given to her by ex-boyfriend Raffaello Follieri that was being held by the Manhattan federal court. Follieri, who is currently in prison for fraud, gave Hathaway lots of expensive jewelry while they were together. Since she missed the deadline for claiming them and getting them back, the jewels are now going up for auction.

Have you ever been in a situation where you broke up with someone and had to decide whether to keep gifts they’d given you during the relationship? If you end an engagement, should you be required to give the ring back?

When asked how Elizabeth Taylor prevents new men in her life from being intimated by gifts from previous lovers, Elizabeth says she only has to, “Encourage them to give me more.”

If it was a family heirloom I’d most likely offer to give it back, but otherwise a gift is a gift. When a marriage ends in divorce I doubt the husband often gets to keep the jewelry in the settlement of assets.
