In this security conscious world, more and more people are required to wear some type of company identification. This doesn’t mean, however, that you need to ruin your clothes with a crappy clip making holes in your collar or lapel. It also doesn’t mean that you have to clip a pulley onto your hip pocket, emphasizing a part of your figure that you many not wish to emphasize.

Treat wear your ID as a fashion statement. Add some color, think of it as jewelry, consider it an accessory to your wardrobe. Make it fun, rather than a chore, and I bet you’ll never forget it at home again!

Here are some very inexpensive options for wearing your ID. All of these are priced under $7, which means you can buy several to mix and match with your wardrobe. All of these are available from Sam Moon. Click on the photos for details and prices.

I’m all about jeans and a t-shirt. It’s an old standby I always feel completely comfortable in – provided I have taken the necessary measures to make sure the outfit still comes together and doesn’t slide into the dreaded category of…sloppy.

Given just how many pairs of jeans and piles of t-shirts reside in my closet, I’ve picked up a few tips along the way on how to make this outfit work with minimal effort. Here are a few tactics I recommend.

Pick a crisp white shirt instead of a pattern – it’s like a blank canvas waiting for the perfect accessories.

I prefer a t-shirt that falls just below my hip bone and is a little bit on the looser side, but you might prefer something more tailored and form fitting. What makes you feel most comfortable will always look best.

A boatneck can be romantic, v-neck is sporty and crew neck a bit preppy. Choose wisely for your personality.

Be brutal about trying on and picking the right jeans. Fit is everything, so if you can’t find a brand off the rack that makes your curves look amazing, get a tailor to do the job for you.

Sometimes all it takes is a sexy pair of heels to push your basic outfit to a more formal level.

Accessories like big bangles or a chunky necklace can make a statement but still exude a special sort of relaxed confidence.

The purse you choose should reflect what you’re up to and where you are headed for the day – or evening – but don’t under estimate the statement your unassuming handbag makes when you meet up with someone.

For your makeup, pick a feature (eyes, lips, cheeks) and emphasize instead of spackling on a whole face full of makeup.

A scarf comes in handy under all sorts of circumstances – tuck a colorful version in your bag and see where it takes you.

A pop of color with bright, well manicured nails can look youthful and fun without seeming childish. Lots of emphasis on the well manicured part.

If you have ever felt the urge to invest in an expensive designer piece, but aren’t quite sure what would be appropriate and how much ‘logo’ is too much…you’re not alone. Until just a few years ago, I felt a little strange and unsure about it all – but I was well aware of cases on the street that were screaming “I’m wearing designer clothes!” way too obviously.

Image: Bauer Griffin

So, I thought it might helpful to bring my thoughts and tips together into one central list of do’s and don’ts. Everyone should have the chance, like Rachel Bilson here, to own an item that is all cheeky and obvious – and be confident about their choice.

Pick one designer. A Coach umbrella, Chanel Scarf and Louis Vuitton Scarf? This would be a terrible combination. Carefully decide which designer best embodies the look you are trying to put forth and stick to that.

Pick one piece. Swathing yourself head to two in logo print everything is too much. There is never a time that this is appropriate. Of course, if you happen to have part of the outfit that includes logos and other pieces from the same designer that don’t, well…that’s just being fashionable. No harm done.

Go for timeless. Sure, if you have the means…get the limited edition tropical print version of a classic piece. But if you’re looking to invest in a bold piece that will serve you for years, go with a standard, a staple, something that isn’t too you, too old, or too trendy.

Make it unusual. There are ways to stand out from the crowd with a piece that doesn’t look like everyone else’s one designer item. You can still achieve timeless without being too safe and spending all that money on…dare I say…boring?

Casual is more forgiving. Jeans, a t-shirt and a fabulous Chanel scarf. And with that (oh, plus a funky hat), Rachel looks effortlessly stylish here. You can achieve this too, and it’s a lot easier to create than you might think, provided you pay attention to steps 1-4, of course.

Evening wear is not. Prominent logos are rarely acceptable for the red carpet. This is why reporters ask who celebrities are wearing. Certainly purchase that gorgeous designer gown, but don’t even think of selecting one that includes logos in the print.

Skip the knockoff. Just don’t. We all know it’s a fake. You will eventually be embarrassed by the fake. You are worth so much more than a fake. Just don’t.
