Wow: Christian Siriano at NYFW

So far the hottest runway of this season of NYFW was far and away that of Christian Siriano.

I was especially blown away by his eveningwear presentation, which totally reminded me of his wild, fun, Project-Runway-winning-era. Two organza cocktail dresses, a navy one draped sexily from the shoulder and a black one embellished with one large, satin ruffle running diagonally from the front of one shoulder to its back, were hot.

But it was the finale dress, a draped-bodice fuschia organza gown covered in tulle – that was my favorite moment of the show, and pretty much created universal cheers in the crowd.

MB Fashion Week Fall 2010: Nicole Miller

Under the tents at Bryant Park on Friday, the Nicole Miller Fall 2010 show featured black wool caps, asymmetrical cashmere tops, wrapped dresses and a black/grey motif. There were some graphic prints and camouflage accents too. Let’s take a look at some of the scenes from the Nicole Miller show.

First Lady Fashions

Our first lady has shown us it’s completely socially acceptable – while still sexy – to show off our shoulders.

And granted, we may not have limbs as sculpted as Michelle, but we can still take a lead from her. This adorable – ironically named – Michelle Dress by BB Dakota is a great way to start.

I’m loving its houndstooth fabric with a big bow on the left shoulder – it’s so perfect for work, and the model’s pairing of it with opaque tights – brilliant!

Aside from the Michelle-inspired bare shoulders, houndstooth is awesome – and like many other prints, hot this season. What a great way to fuse styles!

AJWright: Stretching the Dollar Yet More

A few weeks ago, I had dinner with some of the AJWright team, and we discussed their concept of off-price retail.

It was one I am familiar with: I had flown out to Boston last fall to have a similar meeting with TJX (TJMaxx/Marshalls, of which AJWright is a family member) and learned a lot – about how their buyers get the deals, and just how far the deals can take you. Essentially, they take advantage of department store overstock, and end up with current-season merchandise at a fraction of retail.

But even I wasn’t ready for this experience. AJWright is sort of to TJ Maxx what Old Navy is to Banana Republic – the seen-as-scrappy little brother who will be the one who save the world.

OK, not the world. But tons of money.

Armed with an $100 gift card, I ventured out with my mom today to see just how far I could stretch the dollar. (Or, $100, as the case may be.)

Within an hour, I left with two heaping shopping bags.
