Swedish Royals in Lisse and Leiden

Princess Maxima and Queen Silvia enjoy the tulips in Lisse.

On the second day of their state visit to the Netherlands, April 22, 2009, Sweden’s King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia had both joint and separate engagements.

In the morning, King Carl Gustaf had meetings with various people from the business industry and the Dutch government. Among them was Prime Minister J.P. Balkende. Meanwhile, Queen Silvia visited the International Flower Exhibition Keukenhof in Lisse, accompanied by Dutch Crown Princess Maxima. It was a lovely day for a visit to the gardens, as the famous tulips of the Netherlands are in full bloom.

In the afternoon, King Carl and Queen Silvia visited the Linnaeus Garden and the University of Leiden, accompanied by Princess Maxima and Crown Prince Willem-Alexander. While in Leiden, the royals split the meetings between them. King Carl Gustaf and Prince Willem-Alexander attended a sustainability seminar while Queen Silvia and Princess Maxima participated in a discussion about children’s rights.

Swedish Royals at Nobel Prize Awards 2008

Sweden’s royal family graced the prestigious affair that was the 2008 Nobel Prize Awards Ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.

King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Princess Madeleine, and Prince Carl Philip welcomed the new laureates on December 10, 2008 at the Stockholm Concert Hall. King Carl Gustaf traditionally presents the award to each honoree.

Nobel Prizes are awarded for outstanding achievements in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and for peace. An additional Prize for Economics is awarded in the same ceremony, which is held every year on the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. The Nobel Peace Prize alone is awarded in Oslo, Norway in the presence of the King of Norway. The ceremony in Norway is held on the same day.

The winners of this year’s Nobel Prizes are:

For Physiology or Medicine: Francoise Barre-Sinoussi, Luc Montagnier and Harald zur Hausen
For Physics: Makoto Kobayashi, Toshihide Maskawa and Yoichiro Nambu
For Chemistry: Osamu Shimomura, Martin Chalfie and Roger Tsien
For Literature: Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio
For Peace: Former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari
For Economics: Paul Krugman

After the Awards Ceremony, the Nobel Banquet was held at the Stockholm City Hall. A long table of honor is laid out for the laureates, the royals, Nobel Committee members and various dignitaries.
