Spanish Royals Attend a Variety of Engagements

The life of a working royal can never be described as monotonous. One day, they can be on a military ship and the next evening, at a concert. What the Spanish royals have been going to the past couple of days is a great example of how diverse a royal calendar can be.

Yesterday, Crown Prince Felipe was in the Gulf of Cadiz to attend military exercises aboard the naval ship ‘Victoria’. He interacted with officers of the ship as the exercises were going on. However, I don’t think he took part in any of the maneuvers himself. Prince Felipe, btw, has earned his Helicopter Pilot’s Wings for both the Spanish Army and Navy, and is a Commander in the General Navy.

Today, Prince Felipe attended the funeral of Spanish soldier John Felipe Romero Meneses who was killed while serving in Afghanistan. His presence at the funeral meant he had to skip the ceremony for the 2009 Prince Felipe Award for Business Excellence. His wife, Crown Princess Letizia, attended in his stead.

At the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid today, Queen Sofia met with representatives of various organizations who are giving aid to earthquake victims in Haiti. The organizations were the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Developing (AECID), the Spanish Red Cross and UNICEF’s Spanish Committee. Queen Sofia visited Haiti in January 2009 to visit development projects that have received assistance from Spain.

In the evening, Queen Sofia and Prince Felipe accompanied Princess Margarita, Duchess of Soria, at a concert in Madrid’s Albeniz Foundation auditorium. The concert was organized by Hispano Britanica Foundation. Princess Margarita is the younger sister of King Juan Carlos.

The Spanish royals definitely have the ‘working’ part down pat! Photos of these events in the gallery below.

Royal Fashion Friday: Royal Clutch Bags

For today’s Fashion Friday, we’re going to shift gears from entire outfits to a specific item in royal fashion: the clutch. These versatile little bags can carry a princess or queen’s most important necessities. Perhaps a handkerchief or tissues, lipstick and some other small makeup items, photos of the kids/grandkids? Whatever it is that they may need for royal engagements, these accessories are sure to hold.

The royal ladies of Spain and Denmark, and their pretty bags, are the features for today.

Queen Sofia and Princess Letizia (with King Juan Carlos and Prince Felipe) attended the Foreign Ambassadors Reception, at Spain’s Royal Palace on January 14, 2010. Queen Sofia chose a royally purple little bag (left in photo above) with a gold chain. Princess Mary’s simple black bag accessorized her gray gown.

Bonus royal clutch: Merry Royals reader Andrea asked me about this union jack clutch seen on Sophie, Countess of Wessex. This is one of the Paparazzi clutch bags by ASOS, which are made to look like a rolled-up magazine. There are many variations on the magazine clutch. I saw a few of the union jack ones on the eBay UK site.

Spanish Royals Celebrate Pascua Militar (Military Easter) 2010

The Spanish royal family once again led this year’s celebration of ‘Pascua Militar’ (Military Easter) at the Royal Palace in Madrid.

Military Easter dates back to 1782, when the Spanish Military won a big battle in Mallorca on January 6, the Feast Day of the Epiphany. Since then, the day has been set aside to honor the military forces of Spain. Military parades and a ceremony are held every year at the palace. The King traditionally gives an address, flanked by members of his family.

Spanish Royals Hold Audiences at Royal Palace

Spain’s royal family has closed out the year with final audiences at the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid, Spain. King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia, Crown Prince Felipe and Crown Princess Letizia attended the last meetings with Spanish nobility and members of the Spanish National Heritage Board.

As the year winds down, we get to see one more outfit from Princess Letizia. This is all-lavender, from her fitted jacket, dress and shoes. I love the details on the bottom part of her dress.

It’s been a good year for the Spanish royals, and I wish that 2010 will be one as well. Enjoy these photos and then some later on when I post their Christmas photos.

Spanish Royals Welcome Vietnamese President

Spain’s King Juan Carlos and his family are hosting the visit this week of Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet and his wife Tran Thi Kim Chi.

King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia, Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia welcomed their visitors at the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid today. A luncheon at the palace kicked off the three-day visit.

In the evening, the Spanish royals hosted a gala dinner at the Royal Palace. Queen Sofia and Princess Letizia donned their gowns and tiaras for the formal state affair: a striking red gown for Queen Sofia and a black sequined one for Princess Letizia.

The photo below seems like a scene from Cinderella, where the prince is leading his princess through the dance floor:

Royal Fashion Friday: Princess Letizia's Recent Fashion

Spain’s Crown Princess Letizia has been busy in the past weeks, attending award ceremonies, meetings and other events. The former journalist has worn a variety of styles, from trousers to combinations of short dresses, opaque tights and platform shoes. It’s all about the clothes and shoes today!

Above, the princess and her mum-in-law Queen Sofia attended the annual beneficial market of Nuevo Futuro (New Future) on November 23. This was a more informal visit, looking at the goods available from various merchants. Princess Letizia was in dark grey slim trousers, a grey top and a purple cardigan, and her Burberry Ruched Leather Lowry tote.

Below, Princess Letizia and Prince Felipe presented the ‘Antonio Asencio Journalism Awards’ to the Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (InterAmerican Press Society) in Madrid. The princess wore a short dress, tights and heels in grey/black for the event, with a jeweled belt and bracelet providing a hint of dazzle. And those shoes are not plane Jane either!

Here’s another combo of dress-tights-platforms at the 25th Anniversary ceremony of the Spanish Confederation of Young Entrepreneurs on November 26. This time, it’s in raspberry. The dress had a gorgeous jeweled neckline. A black clutch is all that’s needed to complement the look. Princess Letizia also carried what looks like a thin shawl, but didn’t wear it then.

Princess Letizia had a solo engagement at a meeting with the Association for the Promotion and Care of Mental Poor Adults and of the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery on December 1. Again, a short dress and tights for the event. I don’t care much for the skirt, but the sequined cardigan is beautiful!

Yesterday, King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia, Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia hosted a gala for the heads of the parties in the European Parliament. The reception at the Royal Palace marks Spain’s turn at the 6-month EU Presidency, which starts in January. The princess chose a more business-like jacket and skirt, in eye-catching red.

Lastly, let’s take a look at another event which the Crown Couple attended yesterday. Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia attended the opening of the XII Voluntary Work State Congress at the Victor Villegas auditorium, in Murcia. A nice change from the usual for the lovely princess: knee-high boots instead of platform heels!

Royals Attend Concert for ‘Rights of the Child’

It wasn’t all meetings for the royal ladies who attended last week’s conference on the 20th Anniversary of the U.N. Child Rights Convention. The queens and princess who gathered for the event also got to enjoy each other’s company at a concert on November 19, 2009. The concert was part of a two-day event to commemorate the anniversary.

Queen Silvia, Queen Beatrix, Queen Paola, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, Princess Mary, Princess Victoria, Princess Madeleine, and Princess Mette-Marit were joined at the concert by King Carl Gustaf of Sweden and Queen Sofia of Spain.

Princess Victoria and Princess Madeleine were accompanied by their fiances, Daniel Westling and Jonas Bergstrom. The princesses and their beaus announced their respective engagements in February and August this year. The concert is one of the first royal engagements that Daniel and Jonas have attended, and an excellent chance for them to meet the members of other monarchies as well.

Spanish Royals at National Day Celebration

The Spanish royals led the National Day celebrations in Madrid early this week.

King Juan Carlos and Crown Prince Felipe were both decked out in their military uniforms to acknowledge the parade of thousands of Spanish soldiers through the city. Above them, Air Force jets flew by and left smoke trails of red and yellow, the colors of Spain’s flag.

Queen Sofia, Princess Letizia and the Infanta Elena were also at the celebrations on October 12, 2009.

Spain’s Queen Sofia Returns to Athens

Queen Sofia of Spain went to the New Acropolis museum as part of a visit to Athens, Greece this week.

The museum was inaugurated early this year. It contains thousands of archeological artifacts housed in a modern glass and concrete building. One gallery has a glass floor to show the excavation on the slopes of the Acropolis. Sculptures and other artwork from ancient Greece are among the collections that visitors will be able to see in the museum.

Queen Sofia, who was born in Athens, studied archeology so this visit is more than just a casual trip to a famous site. I’m sure she enjoyed it tremendously, as we can see in these photos. It’s like a homecoming of sorts for her, both to Athens and to see these beautiful pieces of Greek’s history!

Prince Felipe Sports a Beard at Summer Farewell Dinner in Mallorca

Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe sported an entirely new look at the royal family’s traditional farewell dinner in Palma de Mallorca yesterday. The usually clean-cut prince grew out his beard and moustache during the family vacation, and left it on for the media shoot at the Almudaina Palace.

The dinner with Balearic authorities marks the end of the Spanish royal family’s summer holidays in Mallorca. Every year, they go on a working vacation and mix leisure activities and meetings with various dignitaries.

Prince Felipe wasn’t the only one who went for the weekend look. His father, King Juan Carlos, was likewise a bit more bristly than usual.

I wonder what their wives, Queen Sofia and Princess Letizia, think. The ladies, of course, are just as lovely as always.
