At the church, the Queen and Prince Philip briefly met some of the residents who gathered outside the church to greet the royals. A couple of little girls presented the Queen with some flowers.

Now, here is something I have not really paid attention to before. Under her lovely pink coat, the Queen was wearing a pair of boots! I had to look back through older photos, and found that she wore the same boots at a service at St Peter’s Church in Wolferton last month (photo in the gallery below). Now I’m curious whether this is something new in Her Majesty’s winter wardrobe, or something that I just didn’t notice before. I thought she always wore pumps with her dresses. Boots are more Zara Phillips or Kate Middleton’s style than the Queen’s. Have you seen her wear dressy boots like these before?

Denmark’s Crown Princess Mary comes in out of the snow into the New Carlsberg Glyptoteque in Copenhagen on January 27, 2010. She attended the award ceremony of the Elite Research Awards, which are given to outstanding Danish scientists. She wore this striated teal-and-black coat. I actually love this color, and the coat doesn’t need much beyond the black scarf. What do you think? The royal ladies of Spain and Denmark, and their pretty bags, are the features for today.

Queen Sofia and Princess Letizia (with King Juan Carlos and Prince Felipe) attended the Foreign Ambassadors Reception, at Spain’s Royal Palace on January 14, 2010. Queen Sofia chose a royally purple little bag (left in photo above) with a gold chain. Princess Mary’s simple black bag accessorized her gray gown.

Bonus royal clutch: Merry Royals reader Andrea asked me about this union jack clutch seen on Sophie, Countess of Wessex. This is one of the Paparazzi clutch bags by ASOS, which are made to look like a rolled-up magazine. There are many variations on the magazine clutch. I saw a few of the union jack ones on the eBay UK site.

Being a working royal who goes out to attend public engagements pretty much every day must bring with it certain wardrobe requirements. These everyday outfits must be business-like, comfortable, and stylish but not overly faddish. Shall we see how Princess Letizia’s work wardrobe fit the bill?

Princess Letizia wore this purple and black outfit when she visited the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid today (Jan. 22). The look is very much in keeping with the current trends: short hem, booties with tights, and a cute little cross-over bag. Letizia kept it business-like with muted colors and clean lines. We can see Princess Letizia’s preference for minimal jewelry and platform heels.

So today’s fashion feature is Autumn’s coat that Christmas morning. At first, I wasn’t too keen on this coat, with its mix of blue, fuschia, black and white. But the longer I looked at it, the more I like it. Sure, it’s different. But by pairing it with black, I think Autumn has made it a statement piece, rather than something which hurts the eyes. I also do like that flouncy hem, which is better seen in the photo below of Autumn with Peter, Prince Harry and Zara Phillips.

I’m curious about what you think of the piece. Do you like it or not?

The Order of the Elephant is the highest in Denmark, and dates back to 1693. The annual gala at the beginning of the year is hosted by Queen Margrethe for members of the order, government officials and the royal court.

At this year’s Court, both Queen Margrethe and Crown Princess Mary chose gowns in bright stunning colors, fuschia for the Queen, and orange for the princess. Princess Marie was in a more subtle gown of delicate pink.

The brothers, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim, were handsome in their military uniforms. Their father Prince Henrik wore white tux instead of his uniform.

Above, the princess and her mum-in-law Queen Sofia attended the annual beneficial market of Nuevo Futuro (New Future) on November 23. This was a more informal visit, looking at the goods available from various merchants. Princess Letizia was in dark grey slim trousers, a grey top and a purple cardigan, and her Burberry Ruched Leather Lowry tote.

Below, Princess Letizia and Prince Felipe presented the ‘Antonio Asencio Journalism Awards’ to the Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (InterAmerican Press Society) in Madrid. The princess wore a short dress, tights and heels in grey/black for the event, with a jeweled belt and bracelet providing a hint of dazzle. And those shoes are not plane Jane either!

Here’s another combo of dress-tights-platforms at the 25th Anniversary ceremony of the Spanish Confederation of Young Entrepreneurs on November 26.  This time, it’s in raspberry. The dress had a gorgeous jeweled neckline. A black clutch is all that’s needed to complement the look. Princess Letizia also carried what looks like a thin shawl, but didn’t wear it then.

Princess Letizia had a solo engagement at a meeting with the Association for the Promotion and Care of Mental Poor Adults and of the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery on December 1. Again, a short dress and tights for the event. I don’t care much for the skirt, but the sequined cardigan is beautiful!

Yesterday, King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia, Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia hosted a gala for the heads of the parties in the European Parliament. The reception at the Royal Palace marks Spain’s turn at the 6-month EU Presidency, which starts in January. The princess chose a more business-like jacket and skirt, in eye-catching red.

Lastly, let’s take a look at another event which the Crown Couple attended yesterday. Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia attended the opening of the XII Voluntary Work State Congress at the Victor Villegas auditorium, in Murcia. A nice change from the usual for the lovely princess: knee-high boots instead of platform heels!

Sarah Ferguson, Princess Beatrice and Lydia Forte:

Michelin chef Tom Aikens provided the three-course meal, after which there was dancing and charity auction. This year’s theme was based on the Sugarplum fairy from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker.

Princess Beatrice stayed true to the theme in a plum-colored gown, which contrasted nicely with her mom’s green and black ensemble.

Today, Princess Mary attended the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the ‘Rights of the Child’ conference. She paired a loosely-knotted black scarf with her dark blue textured coat.

Andrea Casiraghi let his scarf hang free, for a casual look, despite his tie. He as the guest of honor at the 149th Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction in Beaune, France, on November 15, 2009. Side note: Check out his purple loafers too!

Both of these looks show that the mega-scarf trend is continuing this season. It’s all a matter of choice how you wear it!
